Use the power of referrals to increase your business

When your business grows primarily based on word of mouth, you have made it to the point of autopilot. That is when you have created a sales force that works for you for free. Getting to that point requires a lot of networking, and getting a reputation established.

You can use your web site to do some of that work for you. This is where you can take it to the next level and provide some means of generating referrals.

What would I need to do to increase my referrals?

Your Web site can provide a number if different ways to increase your referral rate. Providing content that is useful for the user will keep them coming back. Statistics show that most of the online activity is based in a search for information, and not for commerce. Providing useful content will give a reason for people to return to your site. Providing VERY useful content will give people a reason to refer others to your site.

Providing content is just the beginning. Building a relationship should be easier with repeated contact. People are more willing to buy from someone that they have formed a relationship with, than from a complete stranger.

So people come back to my site? What do I do with that?

Once you have captivated audience, you can provide a number of different marketing strategies that can be used to increase your revenues. One example would be to place an announcement on your home page of a special that you are running. Or to place an announcement of a contest you are holding.

When you have a large enough audience, you can also use your site to provide additional income in the form of ad space for other non-competing businesses.

What are some of the things to consider when doing this?

It isn't enough bring people to your web site. If your web site gets a lot of visitors, but no one orders from you, or the instructions aren't clear, or you cannot keep their interest, they will leave without performing the desired task you had in mind. The web content should be worded to entice the visitor to do your desired action.

Headlines, wording, colors, and use of other marketing techniques must all be used to increase the ration of visitors to completed action - whether it be to purchase something, sign up for a newsletter, click on a link, etc.
