Radio Show Recap – How to turn your website into a web business

This radio show spent a significant portion of the time on mindset and purpose.  It really doesn’t matter what the system is, or what your goals are if your mindset isn’t there to support what it is that you want to create in your business.  These are the topics that were discussed:

What is your mindset towards what you are currently doing!
Is your website a hobby or a business?
Key indicators between a hobby and a business.  A hobbiest…
…has low resources, low time, low priority.
…doesn’t approach costs as investments.
…is not really interested in making money

How do you view life?  (easy or hard?) – Life happens!
How you view life in general is how you will approach your business.  You take you with you wherever you go.

What is your passion?

Are you doing what you are passionate about?

Who is your target market?

What is the purpose of your website?

Common Website Mistakes – Internet Business Strategies Radio Show

This Wednesday’s show was about common website mistakes that man webmasters make.  We had some good conversation and some questions from the audience about some of these common mistakes.  So what are some of these common mistakes?

  • Not making it clear to the visitor just what your product or service can solve for them instantly.  You only have a short period of time to capture their attention.  If you don’t make it clear within under 10 seconds just what you product or service can do for your client, then you are leaving money on the table…..  A Lot of money
  • Not giving them a clear call to action.  Don’t make your visitors guess what they should be doing next!  Tell them very plainly and obviously.  Explain it to them like they were 6 years old (of course without being condescending). You don’t want to make your visitors work to buy your product or service.
  • Difficult navigation.  There should be no more than 2 steps to get to anywhere from anywhere on your website.  Your navigation buttons should be clear and concise as well as very easy to find
  • Not realizing your visitors will come to your website from other than the 1st page.  You have to design your site with that in mind.  What if someone comes in on your about us page, or your contact us page, or some other non-product specific page?  How do you handle that?  How do you guide your visitor to where you really want them to be so they can take action?
  • Not surveying your visitors.  Your visitors will tell you what they want and 9 times out of 10, you will be surprised that you haven’t thought of it before.  The best […]

Internet Business Stategies Show – Web Design

On our strategies show today, we discussed web design and how that can affect the success of a website.  Some of the topics covered were Flash design and what are some of the best practices with using flash and when you should avoid using flash.  We also spoke about the difference between web design and web programming.

An important focus of the show was the importance of information design and strategy.  That is the concept of how you are presenting your information to your visitor.  How are you doing your navigation, how are you speaking to your target audience, an what kinds of graphics are going to support your message.

One of the most powerful concepts of the show was how we as website owners really need to design the site for our target audience and we sometimes forget that fact.  A great example that was mentioned was really understanding the kind of Internet connection your target audience would be most likely to have.  If most of your audience is still on dialup, then your site can’t be filled with huge graphics and sound files because your visitors will leave long before they ever get a chance to see your site.

Many other topics were covered as well and the file will be posted shortly.

Our guest speaker was Matt Weeden of Matt Weeden design.

Internet Business Strategies Show – Internet Law

This week we talked about Internet law and the things you need to know about with your web business.

Our guest was Douglas R. Griess  of Dymond Reagor Colville and he specializes in Internet law.

This was a very informative show because one of the most important things that came out of it is whenever you put your “shingle” on the internet, you are making yourself liable in the same way that a normal brick and morter business makes themselves liable.  Because it is so easy and so inexpensive to put your shingle out there on the Internet, anyone who wants to sell their book, or their knitting patterns is now out there on the Intenet and they really don’t have an idea of what they are making themselves liable for.

Some of the questions that were discussed were the following:

1.      What is internet law?

2.      On what areas of law should an internet based business be focused?

3.      How is an internet business different under the law from other businesses?

4.      What are the unique risks facing an internet company?

5.      How does one go about setting up a legal entity for internet business?

6.      How does one go about identifying and protecting their intellectual property assets on the internet?

7.       what are the basic steps an internet business should take to protect their intellectual property assets?

8.       Should internet businesses that link and/or refer to each other formalize such a relationship with a contract?

9.       What you should do if someone is defaming you via email or on their blog.
